About the Immunology in Cancer and Infection Laboratory:
A program of 3 labs (Smyth/Teng/Bald) investigates how tumour-induced immune suppression impedes the effective treatment of established cancer. We aim to increase the proportion of cancer patients who will respond to immunotherapy by exploring novel pathways & combinations that can be rationally targeted. Scheduling & safety is evaluated using unique mouse models the laboratory has developed and new therapies designed and translated through to early clinical trials with our clinical colleagues. Our institute is part of a major hospital campus in Brisbane.
Role Purpose / Responsibilities:
Applications are invited for a motivated early career researcher to develop their own team and further leveraged funding within the the existing cancer immunotherapy framework, mentored by Professor Smyth.
This position will involve an active experimenter with mentoring capability familiar with cancer immunology and skilled in one of more of animal experimentation, cellular immunology, complex flow cytometry, single cell genetics, molecular biology, and bioinformatics.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- ability to manage multiple research projects arising from collaborations with academia or with pharmaceutical industry
- supervision of students
- application for relevant grant funding
Our institute has first rate facilities and infrastructure, including the largest gene targeted colony collection in Australia and worldwide.
The applicant will have the opportunity to interact with scientists and medical oncologists as part of the larger Cancer Immunology Group comprising of three laboratories (35 staff and students total). In addition, through our local, national and international clinical collaborations, the applicant will have the ability to translate any novel immuno-oncology targets discovered through our in-house multiplex immunohistochemistry capabilities and access to various fresh and FFPE human cancers. The laboratory also has commercial funding and the applicant will have the opportunity to undertake industry projects.
We are seeking an applicant who is independent, thinks creatively and is taking a 5-10 year view to developing a career in cancer immunology in Australia.
To be successful in this role you are expected to have technical knowledge and experience in:
- Ph.D or MD, Ph.D (3-9 years post-doc experience) from an accredited university in immunology, immuno-oncology or related discipline.
- Hands on experience working with various mouse tumor models.
- Expertise in performing complex flow cytometry analysis on various immune organs and tumour infiltrating leukocytes.
Desirable skills and knowledge include
- Computational skills for analyzing bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing data using various data software packages
You will have a strong publication track record (relative to opportunity). You have will demonstrable experience in the analysis of experimental results and preparation of research presentations. You should demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills and have the ability to work well within established collaborative academic teams and with pharmaceutical companies.
Remuneration: Salary range $82,506 to $110,512 (depending on experience) plus salary packaging benefits and generous superannuation. This is a full time position for three years with strong prospect of renewal to 5 years. The package will include a component of running costs equivalent to NH&MRC EL1 level.
